Samajwadi Party changed candidates twice on 4 seats, which include Gautam Buddha Nagar, Misrikh Meerut and Badaun. He has changed candidates once on 9 seats, which include seats like Moradabad, Rampur, Bijnor, Baghpat, Sultanpur, Varanasi (due to alliance) and Kannauj. Samajwadi Party had put an end to the discussion of Akhilesh contesting elections but suddenly Akhilesh gave a twist to the matter. The question is, what happened within 48 hours, due to which Samajwadi Party had to change the candidate from Kannauj?

Why did Akhilesh Yadav enter the political arena from Kannauj?

If sources are to be believed, the Samajwadi Party delegation from Kannauj met Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow and told that if Akhilesh Yadav contests elections from Kannauj instead of Tej Pratap, then the game can change. Local leaders said that half of the people of Kannauj do not even know Tej Pratap. After this Akhilesh Yadav agreed to contest elections from Kannauj.

Just two days ago, Samajwadi Party had made Mulayam Singh Yadav’s grandson Tej Pratap its candidate from Kannauj. April 25 is the last day of nomination in Kannauj. In such a situation, Akhilesh Yadav had to change his mind just before nomination.

Kannauj seat has been occupied by SP for many years

From 1999 to 2019, the Kannauj seat has been held by the Mulayam family. In the year 1999, Mulayam Singh Yadav had contested elections from Kannauj seat. After Mulayam Singh, Akhilesh Yadav won this seat thrice in one by-election and two Lok Sabha elections. In 2014, Akhilesh gave this seat to Dimple Yadav, where despite the Modi wave, she managed to save this seat, but in 2019, Subrata Pathak defeated Dimple and breached this stronghold of Samajwadi Party.

What does the electoral equation of Kannauj seat say?

Bharatiya Janata Party has made tremendous inroads into this stronghold of Samajwadi Party in the last 5 years. BJP is in control of 4 out of 5 assemblies falling under the jurisdiction of Kannauj Lok Sabha seat. Kannauj has about 16 percent Muslim and about 16 percent Yadav population. Whereas 15 percent are Brahmins and 10 percent are Rajputs. Apart from this, others come in 39 percent. Dalits are in large numbers in this. Akhilesh’s contest from Kannauj will bring enthusiasm among the Samajwadi Party workers but still the battle of Kannauj is not going to be easy for them.
