The process of opening a demat account is very easy. Today, many discount brokers provide the facility to open a Demat account at home in minutes.
However, before opening a Demat account, you should know about the different charges levied on it. First of all, a fixed charge has to be paid in the beginning itself, which is nominal.
Depositories charge maintenance charges for maintaining the demat account. It is also called annual fee. Demat account maintenance charges are usually Rs 300 to Rs 800 annually.
The demat account holder also has to pay transaction charges. It can be easily understood that whenever you buy or sell a stock security, you have to pay some charge in return for it. Charges of different brokerages are different.
Demat account is a type of electronic account, in which shares or securities are stored in electronic form. It is the responsibility of the depository participant to keep it safe, for which they charge safety charges based on the number of security.
However, small investors get exemption from many types of charges. According to SEBI, investors do not have to pay annual maintenance charge on Basic Services Demat account with balance of Rs 50 thousand or less.
